Beirut, now what?

Between the title and the first line, I made two phone calls
Everyone is wondering, Beirut, now what?
I won’t be harsh on you, you are what we’ve made of you
You are so many & so much, yet you yearn in a clutch

Beirut, now what?

We do enjoy the quest, we do enjoy the rush
But my dearest Beirut, this is too much
You’ve defeated resilience, in a corrupted autocracy
Rivers of vermilion, in the name of democracy

Our souls have been left unguarded
By the keepers of our lands
Our homes have been torn into shattered pieces
By the keepers of our lands
Scars enforced on our children to keep
In a tornado of an ignorant world

I no longer wait for your truth
I can barely look at you

For today, you embody a loss of life, a pain of loss
For I no longer feel at ease in your arms, in your trust
Beirut, now what?

Everything we know, everywhere we go
Fatal vile destruction, exhausted by your negligence
Everything we own, even the oxygen in our bone
Disasterous pollution, no sign of affection
